A former dominatrix is fighting to keep her job as a sheriff's officer in the US.

Kristen Hyman of Hudson County has been suspended without pay since late May, reports New Jersey news site NJ.com. Her police bosses found out about her past through posts on social media.

The academy says she failed to disclose that she made bondage videos from 2010 and 2012 and saw clients privately for money, conduct apparently unbecoming of a public employee.

In the videos, she's usually fully clothed while beating up nude men using "whips, and kicking the groin area to inflict pain upon the recipient". She didn't use her real name in any of them, instead going by the name 'Domina Nyx'.

Ms Hyman says she did nothing illegal and shouldn't have been suspended without a chance to defend herself.

On one website, she's described as a "true sexual sadist who hurts people not because she has to, but because it truly brings her pleasure".

She calls the videos "stupid stuff I did when I was a kid" and claims it was all staged. She no longer receives any income from them.

Her lawyer James Lisa said the videos were "clearly inflammatory, but there is nothing illegal" in them.

Ms Hyman faces a hearing on June 27, where it's possible she may lose her job completely.
