A three-year-old Neapolitan Mastiff took out the top prize in a competition she might have been less than thrilled to win: the annual world's ugliest dog competition in California.
Martha's droopy red eyes, uncontrollable drool and baggy skin helped her beat 13 other pups to take out the US$1500 prize at the Sonoma-Marin County Fair.
She also received a trophy, and a flight to New York City for "media appearances," according to contest organizers.
"Never did I imagine that she would be ending up on articles and onstage and on TV," Ms Burkard told the New York Times on Saturday.
Moe, a 16-year-old Brussels griffon-pug mix from Santa Rosa, California, who was the oldest in the competition, came in second.
"We're proud to celebrate all dogs and pets by showing that no matter their imperfections, they are adoptable, lovable and a great addition to any family," Erin Post, CEO of the Sonoma-Marin Fair, told the Guardian.
