A retired police officer who was found with 90kg of marijuana told Utah officers "sometimes it's worth the risk" as he was arrested.

Last month Edward Hansen, 67, who retired from his job as an officer in 1994, was pulled over. Suspicions arose when his "hands began shaking noticeably more", court documents say.

K-9 dogs searched the back and found vacuum-sealed drugs and cash.

"It's a game… sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Today wasn't my day," he said, according to court documents.

Mr Hansen's been charged with possessing more than 100 pounds (45kg) of marijuana, and manufacturing or delivering drug paraphernalia.

Hansen's next court hearing is scheduled for July 25.
