A United States aircraft has shot down a Syrian fighter jet from President Bashar al-Assad's government forces for the first time.
US officials said the aircraft launched an attack on the American-backed Syrian Democratic Forces near the Iraqi city of Raqqa on Sunday.
The aircraft was shot down "in accordance with rules of engagement and in collective self-defence of Coalition partnered forces."
US officials say they used a de-confliction channel to contact the Syrian government to resolve the situation, however the Syrian jet proceeded to drop bombs from the aircraft identified as a SU-22.
The American aircraft identified as a F/A-18E Super Hornet took down the aircraft moments later.
The US released a statement after the incident saying the coalition's mission is to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria..
"The Coalition does not seek to fight Syrian regime, Russian, or pro-regime forces partnered with them, but will not hesitate to defend Coalition or partner forces from any threat," the statement said.
