Australian dole recipients have found a way to cheat the welfare system, by doubling as Uber drivers to make extra money.

"[Welfare recipients] know exactly what they have to earn or to clear before they lose their welfare benefits," Black Economy taskforce chairman Michael Andrew told the Daily Telegraph.

The country's privacy laws also stop different government agencies from sharing information, and Uber drivers are especially "difficult to trace", Mr Andrew says.

There are now calls for the laws to be scrapped or amended, as the many Uber drivers who are on welfare are "hard to trace", he says.

Newshub has contacted Uber to see what regulations are in place to stop the same thing happening in New Zealand.
