A woman in Brisbane is recovering from serious burns after being doused in petrol and set alight in her own home.

The man arrested in connection to the attack had met her just two weeks ago, sources told 7 News. Police were only able to confirm the two were known to the man.

Police said the 28-year-old woman was lying in her bed when the man broke in at around 10:30am.

He allegedly poured petrol over her body and set her alight, leaving her with second-degree burns to her chest, arm, neck and airway.

Her flatmates were home at the time and one tearfully told investigators: "I just walked outside and she was on fire."

The man allegedly fled the scene after the attack, before being found and arrested. He will be charged with attempted murder and torture, police said.

The woman remains in intensive care in a stable condition.
