California road sign hacked to display racist message

A road sign in California had drivers doing a double-take after it was hacked to display a racist message.

The traffic sign in Napa warned people of "Asian drivers" over the Fourth of July weekend.

A motorist pulled over on Sunday night to film the sign, CBS Sacramento reports. Officials were then alerted to the hacked sign and removed it immediately.

The sign had originally been set up to display a detour for a local bridge replacement project.

"Caltrans policy is to always lock the sign control boards, which also require a secret code to operate," Vince Jacala, spokesman for California's Department of Transportation, known as Caltrans, told the Huffington Post.

"Bogus information can be not only a distraction but also create a safety hazard."
