A one-and-a-half kilogram, three-month-old Chihuahua mix is sniffing out a new home, after being left in the bathroom at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas.

The puppy, who is now in the care of local animal shelter 'Connor and Millie's Dog Rescue' was accompanied by a note saying his name was Chewy. The not explained that the owner was in an abusive relationship, and had to get away on a flight, but could not afford to have Chewy accompany her.

"Hi, I'm Chewy. My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn't afford to get me on the flight. She didn't want to leave me but had no other option," the note read.

The note also said her boyfriend had kicked Chewy in the head.

"He's tiny," shelter worker Darlene Blair told KPTV

She said that thousands had reached out to their Facebook page, offering to adopt the tiny pup who is "doing great".

Ms Blair said they wished they could reach out to the owner, and let her know "Chewy is safe, and is being taken care of."

She posted on Facebook, asking people to share in the "hopes that his mom sees this, that she was brave to leave and that he will have a great life".
