A 50-year-old man has been dressing as a woman for more than 20 years to help his mentally ill mum cope with the death of his sister.

The unnamed man, from China, lost his sister to an illness, Pear Video reports - so he channelled his sister's "spirit" to keep his mother happy.

A video that is circulating Chinese social media shows him in the Guanxi region tending to his mother.

"She was so happy [when first did it] so I kept doing it," he told Pear Video, while wearing a long blue traditional dress.

"I've basically been living as a woman ever since... I don't own any men's clothing."

"She is my daughter," his mother says. "When my other daughter died she became my daughter."

Thousands have responded to the video, giving praise and using a hashtag which translates to #HePosedAsHisDeadSisterFor20Years.

However others criticised the video, saying in return for keeping her daughter, the mother lost a son.
