It was late. They were on holiday, drunk and amorous. There was the ocean. What could possibly go wrong?
Two British tourists found out fairly quickly - after being reported for allegedly having sex in the sea, the couple were marched to the local police station at a Thai resort.
It was around 2.30am in Pattaya when the man and woman were spotted close together and getting friendly in chest-high water - right in front of shocked fellow beachgoers.
The onlookers shopped the frisky pair to police and officers arrived, forcing them to get out of the water.
The man was naked and the woman wearing just underwear.
Despite their protests, police made them get dressed, before marching them to their station to face the music.
"Police received a report at 2.30am on July 23 that one male and one female tourist were naked together on Pattaya beach," said Lieutenant Colonel Sombat Kaewmuang, Deputy Inspector of Investigations.
"Reports were they were having sex."
"Both Thai and foreign tourists had gathered around them. Police checked and both the man and woman were intoxicated."
The couple were fined 1000 Thai Baht - around NZ$40 - and released after apologising.
