A man has driven a vehicle into a crowd in the centre of the Finnish capital Helsinki and one person had been killed and some people injured, police say.

They said they had detained the driver, who was a man in his 50s who appeared to be intoxicated.

Four people were taken to hospital with various injuries.

Police superintendent Patrik Karlsson told Finnish broadcaster YLE that there are no indications the incident was terrorism.

It happened on a busy street in downtown Helsinki during the early evening rush hour. Some of the people injured were on the footpath and others on a crossing.
