Two newborn twins have been granted a second chance at life after being found in an empty lot in Brazil.

They were full-term and still had their umbilical cords attached when they were found in Pinhais, Curitiba.

A group of women who came across them first thought the crying they could hear was coming from puppies, one of the rescuers told local media.

The baby girls were rescued by the Polícia Militar (Military Police) on Friday afternoon (local time) and taken to hospital.

Both are recovering well, police said in a statement.

It's believed the infants were dumped by a white van which was seen in the area shortly before speeding off.
