A veterinary student in the UK has had an odd experience trying to diagnose an unmoving, but still alive, hamster.

No one without x-ray vision could have guessed what was wrong with the hamster that hadn't moved in days.

The vet's story was shared on Twitter and quickly got hundreds of thousand of retweets.

She said a young girl had brought in her pet animal which, while very much alive, hadn't eaten, drank or moved from the side of his cage in three days.

She asked the girl if anything had happened to the hamster. He had recently escaped, she said, and hid under the refrigerator.

He appeared fine, but when the vet checked his mouth, she found a bizarre surprise: a magnet lodged inside his cheek pouch.

The hamster had been, quite literally, stuck to the side of his metal cage, due to the magnet.

The story drew a lot of conversation on Twitter, with one tweeter having fun with a pun, writing: "I'm very glad that story had a happy ending. It could so easily have turned into a fatal attraction."
