Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi left thousands of people confused when he ended his speech on tax reform with Darth Vader's 'Imperial March' music.

Mr Modi introduced a new Goods and Services Tax in front of a crowd of 70,000 at New Delhi's Indira Gandi Stadium.

Described as the biggest tax reform in the country's independent history, Mr Modi's final moments on stage saw him waving to the audience as the music blared around the stadium.

The Prime Minister's actions left many on Twitter surprised.

One user asked, "Whose idea was it to play Darth Vader's Imperial March theme as Modi ended his speech?"

Another tried to defend the action: "Maybe #StarWars isn't that big of a deal in India? Or Darth Vader is some kind of role model for #Modi Anyway, it's kind of disturbing."

Someone summed up the situation: "We live in a crazy world, #Modi leave stage with #StarWars villain theme playing."
