A UK mum who pierced her baby daughter's ears is under serious fire on Facebook, with accusations of child abuse flying her way.

Video shows her baby Miley getting her ears pierced at a shopping mall.

The baby screams and looks terrified as two people descend on her to pierce her ears while her mother holds her.

Afterwards, her mother tries to put her dummy in but the baby is unable to stop screaming and shaking.

It's clocked up millions of views since being posted to a piercing Facebook page, with users asking why she would do such a thing to her baby.

People are calling it "cruel", "disgusting" and "barbaric". "My daughter got her ears pierced at seven when she wanted to," said one angry commenter. "You may be the mum but it's not your body!"

"Poor baby girl, mother is sick torturing her baby!! Disgusting. Stop stabbing holes in your children for vanity," said another.

Other commenters supported the mother, saying that the baby would quickly forget the pain.

A petition in the UK is calling on the government to ban the practice of piercing babies, and to set a minimum legal age requirement.

Started by Susan Ingram, who calls the practice "child cruelty", the petition has over 85,000 signatures.

"Severe pain and fear is inflicted upon infants unnecessarily," Ms Ingram says.

"It serves no purpose other than to satisfy the parent's vanity. Other forms of physically harming children are illegal- this should be no different."
