A trailer laden with 20,000kg of Nutella and Kinder Surprise eggs was stolen by sweet-toothed thieves in Germany.

The haul of treats, valued at NZ$80,000 was nicked in Neustadt between Sunday evening and Monday afternoon, police said.

The booty was being transported across the country in a trailer pulled by a truck- but only the trailer was taken.

Police are unsure whether the theft was planned, or whether the criminals chanced upon the chocolate stash.

Another strange case involving chocolate occurred last week when police in Bad Oldesloe, Schleswig-Holstein, released a report announcing they were looking for the owner of 53kgs of chocolate, which was later found in the city.

Though the large amount of chocolate had been found in Bad Oldesloe in May, police investigations into whether it had been stolen or disposed of illegally are still ongoing.
