Texas police officer hit by drunk driver escapes death

A Texas police officer's dash cam has captured the incredible moment he escaped death after being hit by a suspected drunk driver.

Officer Matt Lesell had pulled over a car in July and was approaching it when another car sped towards him, crashing into the parked vehicle and sending Mr Lesell flying through the air.

"It felt like I was spinning through a washing machine," he told NBC5.

"Pain-wise, you don't feel much. You just know something bad happened and the body does amazing things to limit the pain. All I knew was that I was hit. I kept spitting, and because it was bloody and I didn't know where it was coming from, I knew it was bad."

Fortunately he survived, and crawled off the road. He is recovering from a hyperextended foot and a fractured vertebra.

"Every time I watch [the video], I'm still surprised it was not worse," Mr Lesell told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

"My job is going to accidents and seeing horrific events, and I've seen accidents that don't look nearly that bad, but there were worse injuries. I'm lucky with how it turned out."

The driver of the car has been charged with intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury to a police officer.
