The rescue of a dog from earthquake rubble has provided a moment of joy amidst widespread carnage in Mexico City.

Digging through the remains of a collapsed building, rescuers found a confused and frightened golden retriever trapped in the debris.

Footage shows the rescuers carefully lifting the pup from the ruins and petted by its rescuers. A crowd watching from below broke into cheers when they saw the dog.

It's unclear if the dog's family has been found, but her survival lifted the spirits of rescuers and has been widely shared on social media.

Mexico was rocked by a 7.1 magnitude quake on Tuesday (local time) and the death toll, which currently stands at 225, continues to rise.

In a separate rescue, at least one more student was plucked from the rubble of a school in a delicate operation.
