A teenage boy is fighting for his life after a gym session gone wrong in Australia.

Ben Shaw, 15, was working out alone on a bench press when he lost control of the heavy weight which pinned him down by his neck on Tuesday.

It wasn't until 20 minutes later that a staff member at PCYC Pine Rivers gym, north of Brisbane, found him and called paramedics - but Ben was already in cardiac arrest.

The Queenslander weighs only 65kg - but was lifting a 98kg bar with no spotter, 7 News says - highlighting the importance of not lifting alone.

PCYC gym's online regulations state no-one under the age of 16 can work out without supervision. It is now closed until further notice.

Ben remains on life support.
