A photo of Melania Trump wearing large black sunglasses during an appearance has sent Twitter into a storm.

Some Twitter users are convinced the First Lady was using a body double in the recent appearance alongside the US President.

Twitter user Joe Vargas tweeted a video of Ms Trump on Thursday (NZ time), saying that the woman standing next to Donald Trump was a fake.

"This is not Melania. To think they would go this far & try & make us think its her on TV is mind blowing. Makes me wonder what else is a lie," he wrote.

Twitter quickly caught on to the theory, with many users tweeting they were also suspicious the woman in the video was not actually Ms Trump.

However the theory was later shot down, with photos emerging from the same engagement showing the person pictured in the video was definitely Melania Trump.

During the election campaign Donald Trump supporters reportedly accused Hilary Clinton of using a body double.

Ms Trump herself has not addressed the rumour, staying quiet on Twitter.
