The co-author of Donald Trump's memoir has predicted the US President will resign before the year is up.

Tony Schwartz, who ghost-wrote bestseller The Art of the Deal for Mr Trump, is convinced he will give up his presidency in exchange for immunity in the Russia investigation.

The FBI is probing the White House over alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russian intelligence services, and Russia's efforts to derail the 2016 presidential election.

Mr Shwartz, who spent a year-and-a-half shadowing Mr Trump in the 1980s to write the book, told The Independent Mr Trump's circle is "closing at blinding speed", and he will soon have only one option.

"Trump's presidency is effectively over. [I] would be amazed if he survives until the end of the year."

But, he says despite the end being "near", Mr Trump will not back down.

"Trump goes down or we do. He will blow up the world to prove he matters."

The co-author has been a harsh critic of the president since his campaign announcement, believing himself partly responsible for "creating a monster".

"Now I feel like I've got to show there's nobody behind the curtain."
