Former US President Barack Obama celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary with wife Michelle by gatecrashing a talk she was giving with a romantic video message.

Mr Obama, who clearly has more time on his hands after handing over leadership of the US to his successor Donald Trump, made a video thanking his wife for her years of commitment to him.

The video aired near the conclusion of a talk she was giving at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women, taking the former First Lady by complete surprise.

"Hey honey! Listen, I know you're with all these important Pennsylvania women, and you're sharing the stage with our buddy Shonda Rhimes - but I had to crash this party because today we've been married for 25 years," he said.

"Now, the idea that you would even put up with me for a quarter of a century is a remarkable testament to what a saintly, wonderful, patient person you are."

Later in the two-minute video, Mr Obama described his wife as "an extraordinary partner", "great friend" and "someone who makes me laugh".

"Your strength, your grace, your determination, your honesty, the fact that you look so good doing all this, the way in which you've always taken responsibility for your own actions but also for looking out for the people around you is remarkable," he continued.

"It is truly the best decision that I ever made to be persistent enough, asking you out on a date, that you finally gave in. And I hope you feel the same way."

At the video's end, Ms Obama can be heard saying, 'Oh my goodness' - clearly enamoured with his very public display of affection.

"I better get home," she joked to the crowd, to a chorus of laughter.
