A 54 year-old man was killed in a harrowing scene north of Brisbane this week, after falling into an active wood chipper.

Acting Inspector Paul Algie told the Gympie Times that the incident was one of the most gruesome he'd dealt with over 16 years on the force.

"I went out there this morning to speak to officers from Brisbane and I'd have to say it's one of the worst incident scenes I've ever seen."

The man and two friends were working on a private property as a favour to the owner, when he became entangled in branches that he was feeding into the wood chipper.

Inspector Algie told the Gympie Times that the man's friends discovered him and tried to free him from the shredder, but were unable to do so.

According to police, the man died instantly and they don't believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding the grisly incident.
