A 19-year-old photography student has raised eyebrows worldwide by flying 2400km to be with her 53-year-old fiancé.

Michaela Matson, from Nebraska, told the Daily Mail that she fell in love with 53-year-old Canadian trucker, William Madera, after meeting him on an "emotional venting" app online.

Ms Matson described her first encounter with her now-fiancé: "The first time I saw William's photo, I was thinking 'Wow, he's handsome' and was attracted to him straight away."

The pair then reportedly struck up an online romance, calling video calling each other multiple times a day.

When Ms Matson told her parents about the relationship and plans to visit Mr Madera in person, they told her to end it, confiscated her passport and forced her to attend therapy sessions.

"He [her father] threatened to disown me if I decided to keep dating William... Whenever I was texting him, my dad asked if I was talking to 'the piece of shit.'"

Ms Matson defied her parents wishes, got her passport re-issued and bought a ticket to Canada with her own money.

The pair became engaged two months ago but are reportedly waiting for the bride to-be's parents to 'come around' to the idea.

The pair are hoping to be married in August or September next year.
