A mother in the US did not have a happy Halloween after finding a bag of methamphetamine in her son's trick-or-treat bag.

The pair had been trick-or-treating in a 'safe' reserve in Wisconsin on Sunday evening - a day the community deemed more appropriate than the Tuesday, when Halloween is usually celebrated.

But afterwards while searching for a late night snack, she came across the small yellow bag of crystal powder.

Police were called to pick up the substance and identified it as methamphetamine. They're now investigating how the packet ended up in the child's candy haul.

It is not clear whether the drugs were intentionally placed or ended up there by accident.

"The Menominee Tribal Police Department is asking the community to check their children's Halloween candy thoroughly," they said on their Facebook page.

"Once all Halloween Candy is checked, we STRONGLY encourage parents to dispose of their children's Halloween Candy."
