Thousands of Chinese have gathered to watch the public death sentencing of 10 criminals, metro.co.uk reports.

After being convicted for crimes including robbery, drug dealing and murder, the criminals were taken to a sports ground in Lufeng, southern China, to be killed.

Children were among the crowds who watched the sentencing take place, according to metro.co.uk.

It is the third time since June such sentences have been carried out.

In November 1,000 people watched as drug dealers were sentenced, while another sentencing of 13 drug dealers was carried out in front of 10,000 earlier in the year.

Chinese officials say public sentencings are needed to warn people not to commit crimes.

However the executions have sparked debate, with human rights activists condemning them as "inhumane".

Correction: An earlier version of this article stated it was the executions that were public.
