A Florida man has been left paralysed and fighting for his life after chasing a monkey that swiped his hat.

Jeff Swedenhjelm fell 10 metres earlier this week after chasing the primate across a rooftop in Bali.

The monkey had taken his favourite Pittsburgh Steelers cap.

Mr Swedenhjelm was taken to the local hospital, where he was diagnosed with severe spinal cord damage.

He currently is paralysed from the chest down and is surviving on a ventilator.

His family have started a fundraising page on GoFundMe to raise funds for his treatment.

"A few nights ago, in Bali, I had an accident that has crippled me from the chest down, and has only allowed me to feel a tingling sensation in hands and arms," he wrote.

"Early diagnosis is that full recovery is rare and partial recovery will take at least three months to gain feeling in my lower extremities and possibly over a year to walk again."

They've currently raised $78,164 of their $100,000 goal.

It's not known what the monkey ended up doing with the hat.
