A Chinese man has been fined after painting over road markings so he could get home quicker.

Surveillance footage shows the man, known only by his last name, Cai, braving heavy traffic to paint a new straight arrow at an intersection in Jiangsu province.

His explanation?

"I saw the straight lane was always packed with cars," he told police, according to local reports.

"The turning left lane has a lot of space.

"I thought changing the signs would make my commute smoother."

Cai has been fined 1000 yuan (NZ$220) and the arrow has been returned back to normal.
