A newly married couple have had the shock of their lives, after discovering they were childhood sweethearts 20 years ago.

Until a couple of weeks ago, Heidi and Edward Savitt, 26, believed they first met in 2011 while students at Newcastle University.

But during a recent dinner with their mothers, Heidi's mother, Kay Parker, mentioned her daughter's "holiday romance" with a boy called Ed while they were staying in Gumbet, Turkey, 7 News reports.

Ms Parker told The Daily Mail while it was put down to coincidence, a few weeks later she was poking around in the attack when she unearthed a 20-year-old photo album. It had pictures from the family's holiday, and she immediately recognised the six-year-old boy her daughter was pictured with was, in fact, her 26-year-old son-in-law.

Ms Parker says she started screaming when she made the connection.

"It was just unreal. Of course, I sent it to Fiona. Then loads more photographs came out.

"None of us had any idea whatsoever that Heidi and Ed had met before university. But during that two-week holiday, they held hands most of the time.

"Perhaps they just had a subconscious realisation they had shared that time together when they met as adults."

Heidi told The Daily Mail it was a sign they were "destined to be together".

"It's crazy to think we could have got married, shared our lives together, but then never found out about this," she says.

"From the moment we started dating we were inseparable and knew we were going to be together forever."
