The Swedish Prime Minster has announced his support for a proposed law change which would allow for more rape and sexual assault cases to be prosecuted.

The law would require both parties to give explicit consent before engaging in a sexual act; either by agreeing in words or clearly demonstrating they want to partake.

Prime Minister Stefan Löfven told reporters: "It should be obvious. Sex should be voluntary. If it is not voluntary, then it is illegal.

"If you are unsure, then refrain!"

The current Swedish rape law covers a number of sexual acts but there needs to be proof of threats or violence for it to be prosecuted.

The change will therefore shift the burden of proof from the complainant to the alleged attacker.

Mr Löfven and his coalition have been working on the "historic reform" since they were sworn into power in 2014.

If the bill is passed, it would go into effect on July 1.
