A woman has been rescued from a mine shaft in Australia, after spending two nights trapped underground.

The 26-year-old, who hasn't been named by police, said she was taking a late night walk, when she fell down the mine shift in Lightning Ridge, New South Wales.

She was reported missing from her home on Friday and a search party was sent out.

There were serious concerns for her welfare, as temperatures in the area exceeded 40 degrees.

On Sunday morning, a New South Wales Police drone located the woman eight metres down the mine shaft.

Police officers lifted her to the surface using a pulley and harness, and she was given water.

She was taken to Lightning Ridge Hospital in a stable condition and police say she is lucky to be alive.

The woman told police she had tripped and fallen down the shaft, while on her walk.
