A young Texas girl's Christmas wish list for Santa has led to hundreds of donations after her teacher posted her simple plea to Facebook.

Her teacher, Ruth Espiricueta, told television station KGBT she had given students a lesson on the difference between wants and needs. She then asked them to write a letter to Santa asking for two wants and one need.

But what seven-year-old Crystal Pacheco wrote in her wish list was heart-wrenching.

"I have binde [been] good this day," Crystal wrote.

"This Christmas I would like a ball and a food. I need a blancet [sic]."

Ms Espiricueta asked Crystal why she needed a blanket.

"Well, I get to eat at school - sometimes I may not have at home, but I get to eat at school. A blanket I have one, but it's not warm enough," Crystal told her.

Ms Espiricueta posted a photo of the letter to Facebook, saying Crystal's message "breaks my heart".

"This makes me very sad. When your students ask for food, blankets, or a bed instead of toys," she wrote.

"As a teacher it breaks my heart when I hear them ask for things that we sometimes take for granted.

"Hopefully I will be able to fulfil at least one of their Christmas wishes."

And the community responded to the little girl, flooding the school with donations.

"God bless all the people who donated blankets and toys for the children," the school wrote.
