Chelsea Manning, the former US Army soldier who was imprisoned for leaking classified information to WikiLeaks, has filed to run for the US Senate.

According to federal election filings, she is seeking the Democratic Party's nomination for the Senate's Maryland seat.

Ms Manning served seven years in military prison after being sentenced to 35 years for the biggest breach of classified data in US history.

Her sentenced was commuted by President Barack Obama near the end of his second presidential term, and she was released from prison in May 2017.

In response to her commutation, President Donald Trump called her an "ungrateful traitor".

Ms Manning is now a writer and activist.
