A lawyer who represented high-profile criminals was shot dead as he drank coffee at a Sydney café.

Ho Ledinh, a criminal solicitor, was sitting at a table outside the Happy Cup Café in west Sydney on Tuesday afternoon (local time).

According to witnesses, a man wearing a high-visibility vest walked up to Mr Ledinh and opened fire without saying a word.

Mr Ledinh was shot at least four times before the gunman fled the scene, leaving the solicitor in a pool of blood. He died from his injuries.

Police are conducting an investigation into the killing and the culprit's motive. They are currently analysing CCTV footage of the street and interviewing witnesses, News.com.au reports.

They are focused on identifying and tracking down the gunman, who is still at large.

A friend of Mr Ledinh told News.com.au that he was unaware of any threats that had been made to the solicitor's life, despite representing several high-profile criminals.

"His job was horrible because he make some people happy and some not happy."

Another friend told media that Mr Ledinh part-owned the Happy Cup Café, and that he met his wife there.
