At least 46 people have died in Peru after a bus plunged off a road overhanging a rocky beach.

The bus, carrying 57 passengers, struck a trailer shortly before midday on Thursday (local time), and came to a rest on a narrow strip of shore below in Pasamayo, 70 kilometres north of capital city Lima.

Rescuers are working to pull victims from the wreckage, but the effort is complicated by the hard-to-reach beach, which has no road access.

Five survivors have been moved to hospital.

Road tolls in Peru are high. Twenty people died in November after a bus left a bridge in the Southern Andes. More than 2600 victims died in road accidents in 2016.
