More than a dozen people have been hurt after a train failed to stop and hit the buffer stop at the end of the line at a station in Sydney.

At least two have serious injuries, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The accident happened at Richmond station round 10am, but it took nearly an hour to free the trapped.

"My first thoughts are with those who have suffered some form of injury," said Sydney Trains chief executive Howard Collins.

"We don't believe any of [the injuries] are life-threatening or serious. There are reports of cuts and bruises."

The cause of the accident is not yet known.
