It is now illegal to apply makeup while driving in the Republic of Ireland and it happens more often than you'd think.

An Garda Síochána, the police force for the country, made an example of two women they caught out on Wednesday on Twitter.

"Roses are red violets are blue, €80 (NZ$135) fine making its way to you," the post read.

"Two drivers left heartbroken after being fined this morning for applying makeup whilst driving. Early Valentine's preparations perhaps?"

It might seem like an obvious one - but the police even added one of the two was "actually curling their eyelashes".

Putting on makeup while driving is legal in New Zealand, but police say it causes drivers to be distracted and is not recommended.

A previous study by UK insurance company Diamond found around one in five female drivers touched up their makeup behind the wheel.
