Canada's former Minister of National Defence has claimed the Illuminati, a supposedly all-powerful group that runs world affairs and is at the heart of a number of conspiracy theories, is real.
Paul Hellyer, who led the Canadian defence force in the 1960s, made the assertion in his most recent podcast and is believed to be the highest ranking politician ever to do so.
However it wasn't just the Illuminati's existence that he claimed was a reality, but that the secret group was holding back technology that has the ability to reverse the effects of climate change.

"You have a got secret cabal that's actually running the world and they've managed to keep this technology under wraps until they can cash in the trillions of oil assets that they've got," he said on the Lazarus Effect podcast.
"It's not going to change until hundreds of thousands of people band together and say, 'Look, you've got to come clean, tell us what is going on, and change your priorities to save the world for further generations'."
The Illuminati was a Bavarian secret society group of intellectuals which formed in 1776. British historian Professor Niall Ferguson says the theory the Illuminati exists now and is running the world is "lunacy".
"Far from continuing their plot for world government down to the present, [the Illuminati] ceased to operate in the 1780s and efforts to revive the order in the twentieth century were largely bogus."
Mr Hellyer says the Illuminati's rationale for withholding climate change reversing technology was so it could continue profiting from the petroleum industry.
And as for who developed the technology? It's simple, he says: aliens. He believes the US took over a Canadian alien crash site and stole the technology for themselves.
Mr Hellyer is hopeful the aliens will be able to help us if the Earth is ever in serious strife.
