Police have arrested a North Carolina couple after they opened fire inside a movie theatre during a showing of the popular movie Black Panther.

According to Greenville police, Chadwick Cherry, 40, fired the .32 calibre pistol into the ceiling of the local theatre around midnight during an argument with other moviegoers over reserved seating.

His partner, Shameeka Latrice Lynch, 30, was with him at the time and was also involved in the disagreement.

Nobody was injured in the shooting.

The couple fled after the weapon was discharged, forcing police to evacuate 12 theatres searching for them.

Police were unsuccessful in their search and the next morning asked the public to help them find the couple.

Ms Lynch handed herself into the authorities on Saturday and has been charged with discharging a firearm in an enclosure to incite fear and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

She is currently detained with a US$250,000 (NZ$345,667) bond.

Mr Cherry was arrested on Monday and is facing the same charges, along with a charge of possession of a firearm by felon.
