Queensland bus driver fired after leaving 5yo trapped on a bus for hours

A Queensland bus driver has been sacked, after he accidentally left a five-year-old girl trapped on his bus for several hours.

Alyssa Jayde New fell asleep on the way home from Jimboomba State School and the bus driver did not notice her when he locked the bus, leaving her trapped on-board, 7 News reports.

When she didn't arrive home from school mother Bobbie Langdon contacted the police and a large search ended, when officers discovered her crying and banging on the doors of the bus.

Alyssa was reported missing a 4:40pm and eventually found at 7:10 pm on a day when the temperature reached 29degC.

Bus driver Ross Belsham, 79, who had been with the company for 50 years, says it wasn't entirely his fault young Alyssa was left alone on the bus.

Mr Belsham says, while he missed the sweep at the end of the run, the school did not check off her name on the roll and Ms Langdon wasn't at the bus stop to collect her.

At the time of the incident, Ms Langdon had threatened the bus company with legal action and removed her daughter from Jimboomba State School.
