Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is under fire for telling a young girl that she would be honoured if she was "martyred" for Turkey.

He invited the six-year-old girl, who was wearing a military uniform, onto the stage during a speech in the city of Kahramanmaras.

"If she becomes a martyr, God willing, this flag will be draped on her," he said according to AP.

The girl was crying as Mr Erdogan spoke about her.

After kissing the girl on both cheeks, he told the crowd the girl had the Turkish flag in her pocket.

The president has been criticised by former government minister Yasar Okutan, who accused him of using children to try to stir up support for himself in the 2019 election.

He asked whether the president would say the same thing about his granddaughter.
