A Cirque du Soleil performer has died after falling during a show.

Yann Arnaud fell during an aerial straps routine at a Florida show on Saturday night (local time).

The long-time aerialist was rushed to hospital where he later died.

The theatre company cancelled their final two Tampa shows and the accident is being investigated.

"The entire Cirque du Soleil family is in shock and devastated by this tragedy," said Cirque du Soleil president Daniel Lamarre.

Mr Arnaud had been a performer with the circus show for more than 15 years.
