A heartbroken dog has stolen the hearts of hospital workers in Brazil, arriving outside their workplace every day waiting for his dead owner.

The dog belonged to a homeless man who died shortly after being stabbed in a street fight in the Brazilian city of Novo Horizonte in October last year, The Daily Mail reports.

On the night of the stabbing, the unnamed pooch chased the ambulance carrying his owner through the city streets, eventually arriving at the hospital.

His owner never came out, so the dog waited at the front entrance every day - only leaving to scavenge for food.

Two months after his owner's death the dog was still coming every day, so hospital staff began caring for him.

They arranged for him to be taken to a nearby kennel and rehomed, but even with a new owner lined up the dog escaped and returned to the hospital.

As of now, the dog remains waiting at the hospital's entrance.

Photos of him waiting in vain have gone viral on social media after a local woman, Cristine Sardella, shared his story on Facebook.

"This dog stays every day at the door of the Santa Casa de Novo Horizonte hospital waiting for its owner who unfortunately passed away," she wrote.

"He may be waiting in vain, but the love he feels for his owner is eternal."
