An Atlanta mother deliberately crashed her car - with her kids inside - to prove God was real and would protect them, according to a report.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Bahari Shaquille Warren, 25, faces two counts of child cruelty.

Her two daughters, aged five and seven, were in the car when it ploughed into a power pole on Wednesday, authorities said.

"Her eyes [were] closed and she was saying, 'Blah, blah, blah, I love God,'" one of the girls told police.

"She didn't want us to just have a car accident. She wanted us to know that God is real."

In the mother's defence, the girls had their seatbelts on. She reportedly later admitted proving God's existence to her children was her motivation.

CBS affiliate WSBT reports the girls are now in the custody of their grandparents.
