A puppy has a new lease on life after hundreds of empathetic animal lovers donated towards medical bills that helped it recover from unspeakable cruelty.

The canine - a Jack Russell-Parsons Terrier believed to be about eight-months-old - was found in the early hours of the morning on the side of a Kansas road.

Its eyes and mouth had been forcibly closed using super-glue, and it had also suffered heavy bruising to its abdomen. It is thought to have been in that state for between one and two days.

It is thought to have suffered the cruelty between 24 and 48 hours before it was found.

The person who found it rushed it to the Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital of Wichita, where the vet treating it was left "in disbelief at this heinous act of cruelty".

"This sweet baby didn't ask to be born into a world where innocent animals depend on humans to love and care for them," a Facebook post by local pet adoption organisation Beauties and Beasts read.

"She didn't ask to be left in the hands of someone that chose to intentionally hurt her and left her for dead.

"Thankfully she was born into a world filled with loving compassionate people filled with love and will do whatever it takes to take care of her and help find the evil that did this to her, people like you."

Donations received by Beauties and Beasts have been put towards the puppy's medical costs, and a reward for information that would lead to its previous owners being caught.

The amount donated thus far totals more than US$4000 ($5530).
