It started with a single hand.

Police have been called to the scene of a grisly find on the banks of a Russian river after locals found a bag containing 54 severed hands on the banks of the Amur River, the Siberian Times reports.

There is little information about how a bag of hands managed to turn up on the outskirts of the city of Khabarovsk, but there are many theories.

Some locals believe the hands were hacked off criminals as a punishment for theft.

But the discovery of hospital-style shoe covers and bandages means they may been illegally harvested from bodies at a local hospital.

Whatever the cause, there is little information for investigators to follow.

So far fingerprints have only been found on one of the hands.

Local police have refused to comment on the case.
