Adnan Syed, whose murder conviction was the subject of popular investigative journalism podcast Serial, is set to face a new trial.

In 2000, 17-year-old Syed was convicted of the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, leaving her body in a northwest Baltimore park.

The case was the subject of the first season of the Serial podcast, released in 2014 by This American Life. The show's investigation found doubts about Syed's guilt and questioned the legal representation he received at the time.

Serial became one of the most popular podcasts to have ever been released and the fastest in iTunes history to reach 5 million downloads and streams.

In 2016, a judge vacated Syed's conviction after finding his lawyer had not effectively represented him when he failed to investigate a potential alibi witness who claimed she saw Syed at a library at the time he allegedly committed the murder.

On Thursday (local time), the Maryland Court of Special Appeals upheld the ruling, granting Syed a new trial.
