It was no secret in Washington DC that former US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and President Donald Trump had a rocky relationship.
Now 14 months into his job, Tillerson has been fired through a tweet by US President Donald Trump.
Trump tweeted: "Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service!"
He went on to say "Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all."
His tweet amassed hundreds of thousands of likes and retweets.
Trump maintains Tillerson was spoken to, but Tillerson's office said he had had every intention of staying in his role and found out he was fired online.
