A New York woman has been arrested after dumping her box of popcorn on a "noisy" toddler's head in a Long Island movie theatre.

Keil Karman, 25, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child after the incident during a screening of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The mother of the two-year-old, Celia Riggs, said all her daughter did was ask for popcorn.

Ms Karman allegedly began swearing at Ms Riggs after yelling at the toddler to be quiet.

She then forced her hand over the child's mouth, emptied her popcorn on the child's head, and hit her with the box.

Ms Karman and her 61-year-old father fled the theatre when the child started crying.

Police became involved after the toddler ended up at the doctor's later that day because of head pain.

While the attack occurred on January 2, Ms Karman was charged on Saturday. Her father was also charged on Friday for failing to intervene. Their sentences are not yet known.
