A man watching an Easter play has charged on stage and attacked an actor in an attempt to rescue Jesus from being crucified.

The audience member was watching the show in Nova Hartz in south Brazil on Sunday night (local time), when a crucifixion scene prompted his bizarre reaction.

He leapt onto the stage and hit an actor playing a Roman soldier in the head, before kicking him.

Witnesses told The Sun the man was shouting, "I'm not going to let Jesus die!"

The actor playing Jesus stayed in character while his co-stars restrained and subdued the attacker.

Director Adriano Ferreira told The Sun the disruption was "inexplicable".

"We halted the play for a few moments, but as no one had been injured, we decided to continue with the staging," he explained.

More than 1000 people attended the play.
